Hofgut

For this project, I was selected as one of the 20 finalists then later after presenting to the client my work was exhibited in a public exhibition. I was then one of five who were awarded a commision and now have the work in proud position in this fabulous complex.

It was a live brief where only the best 20 submissions would be selected to present in Austria. I was asked to create a series of site-specific* images which would be permanently showcased in a newly opened hotel in Wagrain/Salzburg/Austria. The piece had to be a celebration of the place, the history of the place, the people and/or the community etc. The designed piece could persuade, educate, inform, entertain, and/or celebrate.

*The term site-specific refers to a work of art designed specifically for a particular location and that has an interrelationship with the location.

I researched the history of a place in a meaningful way and thought about how I could respond to a place, to people, to stories with images to capture a feeling. I looked at some of the hidden stories and how I could bring these stories back to the surface. I considered how I could develop ideas that reflect the identity of the hotel and surrounding area and looked at the shared cultural history and heritage of the local area.

Rather than making an image for a wall I took a slightly different approach. From this research and consideration I developed a pattern based on folk art and elements of the surrounding area as well as elements from within the hotel itself. The colour pallet reflects the overall branding but is adaptable to suit other areas of the hotel. This means the pattern could be utilised as artwork for the hotel but also as a brand identity to sell local produce within the complex.
