I Am My Collection

This project was based around the theme of Anthology: A selected collection.

What constitutes a selection?  Why and how do people make selections? What constitutes curation? How do we categorise things?

The unit developed further the creative, graphic, typographic and technical skills from my previous units. Proportion, grids, systems, hierarchies and other typographic and layout issues were explored, with the aim of of constructing a multi page design.

Due to ongoing digital innovations the publishing industry today is confronting fundamental changes: ‘The Page’ is no longer what it once was. We could say that recent technological changes have made the page ‘liquid’. In the face of these changes it is the process of editorial design that is of importance here. The final outcome had to reflect my design intentions appropriately. I developed a written task alongside your studio practice which was a 3000 word essay to produce literary content for the book.

I loved this project. I looked into the psychogeography of collecting souvenirs from nature and even used nature to make the textures for some of the pages, screen printing with dried seaweed, calk and edible gold leaf. This book was printed on translucent paper and japanese bound. This paper choice gave greater depth to the book and was particularly satisfying when the text lined up through the pages.

With the liquid page in my mind, I also made an interactive version of this book which accompanied the app I designed to go with it. This made the book readable in physical form as well as digital. Though i must say, holding the physical book was much more satisfying that browsing the digital form.
